Aquarium volume calculator
Enter your tank's inside measurements to get its volume in litres and US and UK gallons, an estimate of the real water volume, and the weight of the water.

What to do with your tank's volume
- Choose fish that fit. Compare it with each species' minimum tank size in the care guide, or start from fish for small tanks and fish for a 60-litre tank.
- Size the heater. About 1 watt per litre is a common rule of thumb for tropical tanks.
- Dose treatments and dechlorinator by real water volume, following the label.
- Plan water changes. 25% of a 100-litre tank is 25 litres. See how often to change aquarium water.
Common questions
How do I work out how many litres my aquarium holds?
Multiply length × width × height in centimetres and divide by 1,000. A 60 × 30 × 36 cm tank holds 64.8 litres. For a cylinder, use π × radius² × height.
How do I convert litres to gallons?
Multiply litres by 0.264 for US gallons, or by 0.22 for UK (imperial) gallons.
Why is the real water volume lower than the calculator's?
Glass thickness, substrate, rocks, wood and the gap at the top all take up space. Expect roughly 10–20% less water than the outside dimensions suggest; measure what you pour in for an exact figure.
How heavy is a full aquarium?
Fresh water weighs about 1 kg per litre, so a 100-litre tank holds about 100 kg of water before you add glass, substrate and rocks. Use a stand made for the tank.
